Indoor potted cyclamen have been bred from Cyclamen persicum and, in the quest for larger flowers, much of the elegance of the species has been lost. This is now being redressed to some extent.
All cyclamen plants have the potential to last for years, but may only last a few weeks at home. This is largely due to problems with their position or watering.
They like living in a light, airy place, so being in a dark spot on the coffee table quickly leads to problems. When deprived of light, new leaves are smaller and grow on longer stalks. Also, older leaves turn yellow and the new flowers are much paler than usual. The ideal temperature for a cyclamen is about 10ºC, so it's best to leave it in an unheated room as much as possible.
