Indoor Plant Care For Happy, Healthy Plants
Care Instructions :
I usually wait until my pot plant has become lighter in weight or nearly on the dry side. That is the only time you water because when you get constant cloudy and rainy days the plants shut down and will not use up the water and sometimes they will send out yellow leaves. This is natural, it is just the plant's way of telling you that it doesn't need any water. Plants get their energy to grow from the sunlight,
Also after you water you need to let the pots drain for at least 10 minutes. Never let plants sit in water because it causes root rot and disease. It allows insects to breed in the soil, so always make sure there is no water in their saucers. The holes in the bottom of the pots are there also to let air into the soil. In mother nature, we have worms that dig tunnels that allow air for roots. Sadly, we can't do that with most pot plants. Do not water your plant again until it is nearly dry again.
I use powerfeed liquid fertilizer on small plants and ferns. For larger plants, I use slow Release Osmocote or Powerfeed pellets. Liquid fertilization speeds up growth especially ferns and smaller pots because they have more vigorous roots. Also, all plants like to be pruned every month. This encourages thicker and larger leaves.
All plants need light to grow. If you don't want them to grow then they can take medium light but sometimes try and give them a few hours near a window. This will make a big difference to the plant. Then you can put them back in their spot. You have to remember they become greener and it encourages them to grow.
Next is Air flow and circulation. All plant prefer the air to move a little around them. I have ceiling fans on all the time so that the air doesn't get stagnant. This is also true for plants outside, Some can't be planted with a wall behind them because they need the air to circulate around them. Especially Roses, Hydrangeas, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and Orchids. Probably more out there too.
The last thing most people don't realize is that I and growers use tank water or filtered water on all our plants, The reason being that in nature normally plants get watered from rain. Tap Water on the other hand is full of different chemicals and heavy metals. This causes some plants to go brown around the edges. If you are a collector of Indoor plants it would pay to buy a water filter that can fit onto your kitchen tap or onto your hose. Brita filters are not any good for plants because they don't remove heavy metals. If you need more info on water filters, I can let you know what to get. For the time being, you can fill a few buckets of water and then let them sit overnight. This will help dissipate some of the heavy metal. Never use boiled tap water as it increases the strength of the heavy metals.
So much info that I would like to share with you but these are the basics and it will give you healthy green disease-free plants.
